Democracy, Human Rights, Refugees: Burundi National Day

Press Statement
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
June 30, 2011

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Burundi as you celebrate 49 years of independence this July 1.

Your success in the 2010 elections and your continued efforts to build a new political culture that prioritizes peace and dialogue over conflict and violence is admirable. Throughout the African continent, you have demonstrated a commitment to stability and have become a role model for other countries. In Somalia, you are contributing to peaceful resolution through the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and many of your citizens have made the ultimate sacrifice for this crucial mission. I send my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives.

As you celebrate this special day, know that the United States remains committed to continuing our history of friendship and cooperation, and we look forward to strengthening our ties as we work to solve common problems and meet common challenges in the region.
